EMDR, which stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is a gentle and effective therapy that helps people heal from painful or overwhelming experiences. Sometimes, when we go through something difficult, our brains don’t fully process the memory the way they normally would. It can feel like those memories get “stuck,” bringing up the same emotions, thoughts, or body reactions over and over again.
EMDR helps your brain finish that healing process. In sessions, I’ll guide you through recalling parts of the memory while using gentle eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation. This helps your brain reprocess what happened in a way that feels less overwhelming. Many people find that, over time, the memories lose their intensity, and the difficult feelings connected to them begin to soften. The memories never go away, but they become much less bothersome.
What I love about EMDR is that it doesn’t require you to talk in detail about everything you went through. Instead, it allows your brain and body to do the natural work of healing that it is designed to do. Clients often share that they feel lighter, calmer, and more in control after EMDR sessions.
EMDR is also very effective and safe for children and teens. Since young people often express themselves through play, stories, or creativity rather than words alone, EMDR can be adapted to meet them where they are. It gives children and teens a way to process upsetting events at their own pace and without having to talk in detail about the events. Parents often notice their child becoming calmer, more secure, more resilient, and better able to manage big feelings after EMDR therapy. And please know—your child will never be pushed to share more than they’re ready for. EMDR is designed to be gentle, supportive, and paced in a way that feels safe for them.
If you’re curious about whether EMDR might be right for your child, teen, or even for yourself, I’d love to talk with you. Please feel free to reach out with any questions or to schedule a free consultation—I’m here to support you in taking the next step toward healing.
